The modern world can be a challenging and difficult place for all of us. Life seems more complex and pressured with everyone busy and hurried. It is easy to become depleted physically and spiritually in these circumstances, and to lose touch with what’s important.
Orama is the perfect place for a spiritual retreat whether this be by yourself, with a group, guided with a retreat companion or unguided. Our Making Room programme includes retreats for small and larger groups. During your retreat time you are welcome to be as involved in as much of the day-to-day rhythm of the community as you like. For those who need a starting point for how to take time out during a retreat we have produced a basic retreat guide which you may find useful.
A Thin Place
People have commented that Orama Oasis is one of those ‘thin places’ on Earth, where God seems extraordinarily close. Our remote location and beautiful natural surroundings make Orama an ideal setting in which to seek God and to be inspired – away from the distractions and noise of city life.
Relax and Recharge
Orama is literally an oasis that can restore the spirit and give people from all walks of life a real break. Visitors can really relax here in a stunning seaside location, surrounded by peace and pastoral care, with everything including meals prepared for them. Guests have an opportunity to recharge and head back into life with a new focus and sense of well-being. Church leaders have found rest here. Others have found healing after a divorce or found the courage they need to face life’s challenges, renewed their faith or discovered new hope.
Orama Oasis functions as a living Christian community seeking to express in our individual and corporate lives a sustainable rhythm of prayer, worship, scriptural study and ministry. We make room for God in our busy lives and commit ourselves to love one another and live in an authentic expression of Christian faith. Christian and non-Christian visitors regularly join our community for days, weeks or months, to share in this compelling experience.
Orama's own spiritual rhythm is built around some regular community activities:
- each day at 8:00am a small number gather for contemplative prayer in the chapel. You are welcome to join us.
- we gather for morning tea and a brief devotion each week day at 10.30am in the dining room. Again you are welcome to join us.
- our shared fellowship and worship takes place on Wednesday evening. Leadership of content and theme is shared in rotation between the Orama Community members. You are welcome to join us, please ask for details of where and when.
Some of our Community staff members are available to meet with you and offer a time of specific prayer or conversation. Please speak to a staff member in the office if you would like to meet with one of these people. There may be a fee or koha for their time.
Should you wish to spend some time of the day or week in silence, please let the staff in the office know. We can probably assist you with a quiet dining space and uninterrupted time on site, if we all know.
There are lovely places to walk on the property and over the wider island. Please inform the staff of your route and destination if you are planning a long walk on your own.
