19th August 2017 Dark Sky Sanctuary Launch
The hall at the Claris Sports Club was packed with dignitaries and locals from all over the island for the launch of Aotea Great Barrier Island International Dark Sky Sanctuary. It was fantastic to see the huge effort from locals Gendie and Richard Sommerville-Ryan and Nalayini Brito come to fruition - this team of three were responsible for the application to the International Dark Skies Association (IDA). Their efforts were supported by the Local Board and Destination Great Barrier Island (of which our own Carolyn Leys is the chair). There were passionate speeches from Phil Goff (Mayor of Auckland), Nikki Kaye (Local MP), Mike Lee (Chair Auckland Regional Council), Izzy Fordham (Chair GBI Local Board), Jeff Cleave (Local Board), Nicola MacDonald (Chair Ngati Rehua ki Aotea Trust) and Karakia by the kids from the local school. Here Richard (with cloak), Phil, Izzy (with hat) and Nalayini can be seen cutting the cake!
23rd June 2017 Great Barrier becomes the only island Dark Sky Sanctuary in the world
It is now official. After months of anticipation the local board's application for Great Barrier to be a Dark Skies Sanctuary has been successful. You can read about it here
. This is a fantastic development opportunity for the island and for Orama. Orama will be integral to offering official Dark Skies experiences here in the north of the island and will be starting to offer star gazing experiences to visitors in September when Fatherheart is here.
17th May 2017 Kids Playground
Come and help us celebrate the opening of our new playground. The playground was recently completed by a work team lead by Kerry Raikes. Kerry has put his own stamp on the project, complimenting the original design with creative landscaping that integrates the playground beautifully into the site. We are very grateful for funding assistance from the local Board whom we hope will be present at the ceremony along with members of our own board of trustees. The opening ceremony will commence at 3pm on Saturday 27th May and will be followed by afternoon tea.
7th May 2017 Dark Sky Sanctuary
A great article by Paul Charman in the NZ Herald
about Great Barrier's application for International Dark Skies Sanctuary status. If successful Great Barrier would be one of only three Dark Sky sanctuaries in the world. Paul was recently at Orama for a holiday with his family and investigated the Dark Sky story during his visit. Orama is working with the local board to offer a Dark Sky experience for visitors to the north of the island and is actively advertising for a young volunteer astronomer to help develop and present the experience.Watch this space ...
