A good vacation needs to have a balanced mix of ingredients to ensure that it is refreshing and restorative. Here at Orama we love helping people to rest and refresh in this peaceful and beautiful physical space.

People say that: “travelling to a destination and actively immersing oneself in a totally different experience, with local people of the destination who are engaged in their lives, can offer opportunity for a life-changing pause”.

If this is what you are seeking as part of the mix of ingredients for a good holiday, then the Orama Oasis team can help you plan your next vacation.

Our Walks and Wisdom package is designed to put small groups of our guests together with a range of Aotea/Great Barrier Island residents who can offer insights and stories about their beloved island.

We provide you with the chance for conversations and shared experience with people on their home ground and we will give you authentic experiences in our beautiful island environment.

Opportunities include:

Caring for our Planet

  • Meet some of Aotea’s precious and vulnerable birds, and those who love and protect them -  the gannet colony, shorebirds, forest birds and migratory seabirds.

  • Learn about how we protect and heal vulnerable watershed regions: from the ridge to the sea – pests and controls,  land management and energy use.

  • Participate in a working wildlife Sanctuary project: work alongside the team for a day or week, or several months.

Learning from the people of this island about Maori and European Settler History

  • Searching for Silver and Copper: mining stories from the source.

  • Learning from the first people of this land (mana whenua) regarding Aotea:history, plant use for food, healing and fibres, community life and protocols.

Orama Oasis staff will manage transport, food, beverages and co-ordination with the local host for the day. Your job will be to have fun and have some new experiences.
