Orama Christian Community
Orama is a Greek word meaning ‘vision’. The Orama property has been a
Christian ministry Centre for over forty years, and has seen many variations
in its emphasis over that time. Today we host a variety of camps,
conferences and other short term events and courses. The Edmund Hillary
Outdoor Pursuits Centre lease a portion of our property and operate on site
all year round. Orama has a wide range of accommodation options from simple,
cheap bunkrooms, cabins set on the hillside, a large lodge and lastly, self
contained units and houses. All the meals are prepared in our large
commercial kitchen and are healthy, tasty and nutritious. The beautiful and
tranquil surroundings are well known as a popular holiday destination for
those who enjoy the outdoors. There are many excellent walking tracks close
to Orama and great surfing, diving and fishing on the doorstep. For those
who just want some peace and relaxation - no motorways, malls or fast
food!!!
Speaker: Dr Peter Hicks
Dr. Peter Hicks and his wife Gwen live in London, England, we are delighted
to welcome Peter and Gwen on their first visit to New Zealand. Well
experienced in many forms of ministry, Peter and Gwen have both been on the
staff of the London Bible College (now the London School of Theology). Peter
has written about a dozen books, including the bestseller, 'What could I
say? A handbook for helpers'. His latest book, on 'Evil and Suffering' in
the IVP 'Bible Speaks Today' series, has been described by the The Church of
England Newspaper as 'masterly and perceptive' and 'an immensely helpful
book'. This will be a wonderful opportunity for those who want to recharge
their batteries through teaching, discussion and ministry, as well as
enjoying the delights of a fantastic holiday in the beauty that is Great
Barrier Island.
What to Bring:
There is no reticulated power on the island, therefore we generate our own
power by diesel generator. The power is on for approximately eight hours per
24hr period. We strongly recommend that you bring a good torch with you,
there is a short distance from the cabins to the bathrooms. The main lodge
has 24hr battery lights in the corridors and stairways. A good pair of
walking shoes or trainers is also a smart idea.
Travel Options
We are planning on chartering a ferry from Sandspit (5 km from Warkworth)
for the conferences. Cost for this is $110 return. The alternative is to fly
with Great Barrier Airlines from either Auckland Airport or North Shore
Airport (near Silverdale). Contact phone number is 0800 900 600. If you you
choose to fly you will also need to book a shuttle bus from the airport to
the Orama complex this number is 09 4290 052.
